Chatting
To chat in the room, the white bar at the bottom of the screen you place your mouse over and left click once in it. Simply type what you'd like to say in there and hit enter or left click once on the "send" button to the right of the white bar.
Chat Commands
Here is a list of some of the commands you can enter into the bar that do different things in the room.
Nickname chat command: Type /nick nickname
This command will change your Guest nickname into the nickname of your choice.
Example: /nick Sally
Would change your nickname from Guest to Sally
Away chat command: Type /away away message here
Sometimes you need to step away from the computer for a short period of time. To let other members know you are away you can use the Away command.
Example: /away On the Phone
This command will put an away message by your name in the members list.
*Remember the room does have an idling rule. If you are going to be longer then 2 hours please just remove your nickname from the chat room and return when you are active again
Whispering Command: Type /notice nickname
Whispering allows you to talk to another member privately without having to open a P2P window. Only you and the other member can see the whisper
Example: /notice DVHOST Hi DV can I talk to you private for a moment in P2P?
This will send a message to DVHOST only.
Action Command: Type /me action
The action command allows a user to do an action in the room.
Example: /me hugs everyone
This will show in the room as an action.
DV hugs everyone
Instead of the normal text
<DV> hugs everyone
Clear Command: Type /clear
This action will clear the all the text from the screen.
Quit Command: Type /quit message here
This command disconnects you from the server and shows the room a message.
Example: /quit have to go! Be back soon!
This will show you leaving the room with the message you put in following the quit command.
DV Quit (have to go! Be back soon!)
P2P Chat or Peer to Peer Chat
Sometimes you may want to have an in depth discussion about a problem your having. Not necessarily to the entire room, so you may want to go into P2P. Before you do so, ask the member or host if they are ok with it. If they say no then do not do it anyway, perhaps someone else will. To do this right click on their name in the right column, then go down to "Person to Person chat" left click on that. This will open a new room like window but it's only a discussion between the 2 of you. Another way also to enter a P2P is to look at the icons at the top of you screen. There are 8 of them if you click the 4th one in from the left after once left clicking on the members name on the right hand column, which will also take you into a P2P. To leave the P2P up at the top it will say "Person to Person Chat with *Member Name* and keep going to the right and click that little X in the corner.
If someone is P2P'ing you a box will appear with a message " *member name* is requesting a person-to-person chat with you " The next line you will see is a brief description of what they are saying. Then you have 4 options: Chat, Cancel, Ignore User, and Ignore Users Domain. If you said it was ok to chat with the person click "chat" and it will take you into a P2P with them. If you do not want to P2P with them click "Cancel" and it will go no further. If another one pops up from the same person click "Ignore User". It will block all P2P requests from that person until you say otherwise. Ignore Users Domain we don’t recommend using as it blocks a lot of P2P requests, perhaps your friend is on the same Domain and they will not be able to P2P you. If things get tough simply ask a host for help and tell them the trouble.
Ignore Command: Placing and Clearing
You may have ignored someone by accident or don’t feel that they need an ignore any longer. To clear the ignore simply right click on the members name on the right hand side, go down to "Stop ignoring member" and left click once on that. That will clear that persons ignore but leave the rest you have placed. If you feel that you've placed too many simply do the same process except "clear all ignores". To place an ignore follow the process above and click "Ignore member" this will remove their text from you seeing it. They can talk in the room others will see it but not you.
Avatars: (icons by name)
Once your nickname is registered you can select an avatar (picture next to your name). To do this you can either: double left click on your name on the right and click "Change Avatar" then select the one you would like to use and hit ok. Or you can right click once on your name in the right hand column and select change avatar.
The Eight Icons at the top of your screen and what they do:
1st Icon "Chat Options”: Once opened will display a small box, will tell you the name your using and room your in. You can disable sounds or enable them in this section, if it is checked it is enabled. You can block Memo's, P2P with your friends only, show timestamps etc. with this section. As well as update your profile or view another members. When you've made all your selections simply click "close" at the bottom and it will remove the window.
2nd Icon "Room Options”: Here you can view a list of the moderators of the room if you have any troubles. If you believe someone is not a moderator you can look here and it will show you a list of moderators.
3rd Icon "Member Profile”: Here it will show you a few little things about the person should they choose to have shared any. Such as their name, email address or website, a lot of members have personal websites. These sites are not checked but if you find an offensive one please notify a host. If you highlight your own name and bring up your own profile, here is where you can put in little things about you. Keep in mind that everyone who wishes to can see this or you can select the "Private Profile" option and it will keep everything private. This is also where you can change your password if you need to, we do recommend changing it from time to time.
4th Icon "Person to Person”: As explain above just highlight the members name in the right hand column and click this button. That will put you in a personal chat with that member, should they choose to accept it.
5th Icon "Members List”: Clicking this will open a pop-up window display all members on the server. It has instruction as to how to look up members and display profiles for them. If you have a pop-up blocker installed simply hold down the "control key" and click the icon at the same time. This will allow that one pop-up through that one time.
6th Icon "Send File”: If you and a person with to exchange files (which we do not recommend doing or accepting as we have no control over it). You highlight the members name in the right hand column and press this button. It will bring up a box to find the file on your pc you wish to send, double click the file and away the file goes. The person will have to accept it though before it is sent. Remember we have no control over what is sent, we recommend caution in doing this. We take no responsibility for what is sent between you and another member, as you both have to agree to the file transfer.
7th Icon "Send Memo”: This will open a small window where you can send a quick personal message to them. They will get a memo has arrived notice and go check it if they feel comfortable. Keep in mind please ask first before doing this.
8th Icon "Ignore/Un-ignore/Clear all ignores”: Clicking this will open a small window with the person’s name you have highlighted. You will see their name and next to it "ignore member", clicking that will ignore that member as stated earlier. Remember to refrain from ignoring a domain, if it gets to that point please ask a host for assistance (blue names in the room at the top of the screen). Also here you can clear all your ignores and see a list of who is ignored. Highlight the single ignore you would like to allow to see their text again and hit delete. That will remove one of the ignores you have placed. Clicking clear all will do just that and wipe them all out. When done click close and return to chatting.
The Five Icons at the bottom of your screen and what they do:
1st Icon "Add a sound”: Clicking this will bring up a list of available sounds to add to the one line of text you are about to send. Highlight the one you'd like to use and left click on it, type what you will as usual and hit enter or click send. The text and sound will go through to everyone in the room. Please do not repeatedly use sounds, once in awhile if fine. Please remember to respect your fellow chatters as some of us have our sounds up.
2nd Icon "Add emotion" : This is where you can insert smiley faces into the text you are about to send, left click on the one you'd like to use and type as you would. That smiley will appear in the text after you hit enter or click send. Again, please do not abuse the smiles.
3rd Icon "Send this message as an action”: This will make your text red with the symbol that you click before your name. Same as explained above with the /me under chat commands.
4th Icon "Change text foreground color”: Here you can change your color of your text to a wide variety of colors. We ask that you refrain from the neon or bright colors as it hurts the eyes.
5th Icon "Change text background color”: We ask that you Do Not use a background color in this room at all. Some of you on mIRC may not notice you have one on and will be asked to remove it.
Increasing the size of the text in the room
Some of us have a hard time seeing the chat and what's going on. To increase the font size move your mouse over where you see all the text scrolling by and right click. You can increase or decrease your font size this way.
