Specific Phobias
Specific Phobia’s are defined by the excess fear of a situation or object. When exposed to the object or situation the person finds an increase in anxiety usually resulting in a panic attack. People with specific phobias understand their fear is excessive and unreasonable but are still unable to control it which results in the avoidance of the situation or object.
Specific Phobia is diagnosed when an individual's fear interferes with their daily routine, employment. (Example: Unable to go to social events do to the fear of large crowds)
Specific Phobias are often brought on by a traumatic event but also may have been onset in childhood. Phobias that begin in childhood could disappear in adulthood. Animal and insect phobias are the most common specific phobias.
